Tailor Made Botswana Tented Safaris

A tailor made private safari is flexible and the following 5 night itinerary in the Moremi Game Reserve, part of the extraordinary Okavango Delta, is a sample of one of the many variations we are able to offer.

During the dry season (June-November) the most productive wildlife viewing areas are Moremi, Savuti and Chobe, but during the green season (December-May) the Central Kalahari, the Makgadikgadi and the Nxai Pan are teeming with herds of zebra, wildebeest, oryx and springbok with all the big cats in hot pursuit.

Birding safaris are excellent throughout the year, but particularly so during November-April when the intra-African and Palearctic migrants visit the region.

“We've been back for a week now but our hearts are still in Africa! We thank you for the most incredible experience on a family vacation ever.”

Day 1: Arrive Moremi & Afternoon Game Drive

From Maun you will either fly or drive into the heart of the Moremi where your private tented camp in a beautifully appointed exquisite location awaits.

The camp can be of differing levels of luxury depending on your choice and budget. But always extremely comfortable with spacious tents and en suite facilities even if it consists of a bucket shower and long drop loo design!

Two days will be spent in the vicinity of either the Xini Lagoon or Bodamatau - both known for their active lion prides and wild dog packs.

Your first afternoon drive in an open topped safari vehicle will introduce you to this wild and beautiful area before heading back into camp just after sunset.

We will enjoy a delicious meal under the stars and retire to bed accompanied by the sound of a hooting owl or perhaps a leopard’s rasping call.

Day 2: Private Game Drives

Being such a rich wildlife area we could well have been waken in the night by unusual noises in the camp!

An early start with breakfast around the campfire. Today we have the freedom to head in any direction that takes our fancy. On safari it is important to be flexible and to allow your days to be dictated by the movement of the game rather than the time.

Perhaps having heard the sawing rasp of a leopard at night we may spend the morning searching for this most elusive of cats. Or perhaps we may head to the nearby hippo pools to sit quietly and be entertained by their constant antics.

As the day warms up the herds of elephant, that Botswana is so well known for, will appear out of the endless mopane woodland in search of water and a cooling mud bath. When temperatures begin to soar we venture back to camp for a light lunch.

As the day draws to a close the evening light is perfect for photography and our afternoon drive will offer some beautiful images and surely some wildlife action as the predators raise themselves from their slumber.

Day 3: Okavango Delta Adventure

Driving northwards slowly making our way up to Xaxanaka Lagoon a boat awaits to take us on an incredible overnight adventure into the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta.

The papyrus beds surrounding the lagoon are home to the rare sitatunga antelope whilst the waters resound to the cry of the fish eagle.

Entering the Moanachira Channel we pass pods of hippos and basking crocodiles and often find an old bull elephant deep in the water feeding on the lush reed beds.

By late afternoon we reach our camp on Gcodikwe Island to find dome tents with bedrolls and an open camp fire on our very own private island.

We enjoy evening sundowners observing the setting sun over Xhobega Lagoon whilst gently floating past flocks of herons and egrets as they fly into their nightly roosts.

Day 4: Walking Safari & Boat Cruise

Exploring the island on foot early in the morning is followed by a hearty breakfast before boarding our boat to slowly drift down stream back to the Xaxanaka Lagoon.

Whilst we have been on the island our tented camp will have been moved to another location on the edge of the Mboma Peninsula.

This is as deep into the Moremi you can go by vehicle and is renowned for its herds of buffalo, up to a thousand strong and cheetah that hunt the open plains.

Day 5: Explore the Okavango Delta

Today we may want to search for species not yet seen or to just enjoy whatever wildlife we come across.

Perhaps we will take a picnic lunch to a hidden spot where we can swim in the crystal clear waters of the Okavango as they flow over the yellow sands.

This is a place to appreciate the beauty and tranquillity of this very special part of Africa.

By now we will have a wealth of incredible wildlife memories and fascinating stories to take home with us – many of which we are sure to reflect on as we enjoy our last night around our camp fire.

Day 6: Homeward Bound

Driving to the airstrip or all the way to Maun there are bound to be a few more wildlife surprises waiting for us!
